Join an exciting team working to advance autonomous, conventional, electrified, and smart connected products within Toro’s Landscapes and Contractor Group, consisting of Toro, Exmark and Spartan brands.   This position will play a key role in defining vehicle and sub-system architectures, creating safety architectures and methodologies, developing autonomous platforms, and developing electrical and electromechanical systems.

What Will You Do?

In order to grow and build a successful career with The Toro Company, you will be responsible for: 

  • Leading the definition, design, development, testing, and validation of autonomous and non-autonomous vehicle platforms.

  • Conceive, architect, design, develop and verify electrical, mechanical, software, and electromechanical systems for machine control, electrification, alternative power, functional safety, and autonomous control.

    • Design responsibilities also include product cost, schedule, durability, safety, performance, manufacturability, and quality. 

  • Developing requirements, specifications and appropriate documentation at a systems level.

  • Overseeing the detail design performed by project teams, ensuring that technical requirements packages and other documentation are completed properly.

  • Performing or overseeing the analysis of proposed engineering designs using calculations, testing, data acquisition and processing, simulation or other techniques.

  • Procuring and coordinating the efforts of outside consultants, labs, suppliers, etc.

  • Collaborating with Legal on potential patent activities and liability avoidance.

  • Developing products to meet regulatory requirements and working with applicable  agencies to obtain approval.

  • Plans and executes engineering development:

    • Works with engineering and product management to develop product proposals to satisfy specific market requirements.

    • Helps to establish overall product specifications and features, design features, design objectives, schedules and budgets.

    • Understands the needs and expectations of L&C customers - especially in terms of autonomous machine operation - and plans products and technologies that meet and exceed those needs and expectations.

    • Conducts feasibility studies to reveal idea practicality and potential design or program issues.

    • Assists the Test department in developing and executing test plans, and interprets results.

    • Works with project leader or acts as project leader, coordinates engineering activity, assigns tasks and duties, empowers the team.

    • Informs and updates project team members, product and engineering management and directors on project status and plan as needed.

    • Works with Marketing, Sales, Management, Shop, Drafting, Test, Research, Manufacturing, Sourcing and Accounting as required by the project.

    • Supports current products, production and suppliers.  Troubleshoots issues, approves solutions and deviations, performs design and cost improvement activities.

    • Works to identify emerging technologies and participates in long-range product planning initiatives.

    • Oversees, mentors, and reviews the work of others.

    • May have direct reports.

    • Some overnight travel may be necessary to other Toro locations, test sites, distributors, dealers, customers, suppliers, manufacturing facilities, or trade shows.

What Do You Need?

To be considered for this role, an individual should meet the following minimal requirements: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical, mechanical or mechatronics engineering, or equivalent engineering program, from an ABET accredited college or university.  

  • Engineer III: 5+ years of relevant experience.

  • Engineer IV:  7+ years of relevant experience.

  • Demonstrated multi-disciplinary knowledge of mechanical, electrical, mechatronics, and control systems.   Must be strong in one area and have working knowledge in other areas.

  • Demonstrated competency in product development, through development and production, of electrical, electromechanical, or electrified systems or products.

  • Demonstrated leadership abilities in product development teams.

  • Demonstrated communication, collaboration and mentoring abilities.

  • Highly competent oral and written communication skills, in English.

  • Results-driven and action-oriented; self-motivated, positive and energetic.

  • Strong problem solving skills.

  • Strong process orientation and drive for continuous improvement.

  • Desire to work in a fast paced, challenging, and evolving environment with a team-first mindset.

  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, of various complexities and size.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience in product development of off-road power equipment is preferred.

  • Experience with CAN or similar communication protocols preferred.

  • Experience and capabilities in embedded firmware development is preferred.

  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and troubleshoot vehicle electrical systems using machine schematics, meters, oscilloscopes and data acquisition equipment is preferred.

  • Experience with and knowledge of applying Functional Safety to a system is preferred.

  • Experience working with NRTL’s to achieve regulatory approvals is preferred.

  • Experience working in an Agile product development environment is a plus.

Competitive Salary The pay range takes into account skills, experience, education, and location. It is not common to be hired at or near the top of the range; compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the annual pay range is between ​$90200-- ​$140000​. Cash compensation is one piece of our competitive total rewards package. You may be eligible to participate in an incentive program, which rewards employees based on individual and organizational performance.
