The Product Development Engineer is a senior-level engineering role responsible for leading the design, development, and validation of innovative products across The Toro Company’s portfolio. This position serves as a technical leader, driving complex projects from concept through production while mentoring junior engineers and influencing cross-functional teams. The role requires deep technical expertise, strong business acumen, and the ability to translate customer needs into high-performing, manufacturable solutions.

What Will You Do?

In order to grow and build a successful career with The Toro Company, you will be responsible for: 

Product Development & Engineering Leadership

  • Lead end-to-end product development initiatives, including concept generation, design, prototyping, testing, and production launch

  • Drive innovation through advanced engineering principles, emerging technologies, and customer insights

  • Serve as a subject matter expert in one or more technical domains (mechanical systems, electrification, hydraulics, or embedded systems)

  • Ensure designs meet performance, reliability, cost, and manufacturability targets

Project & Cross-Functional Leadership

  • Lead cross-functional teams including manufacturing, marketing, supply chain, and quality

  • Manage multiple complex projects simultaneously, ensuring timelines and budgets are met

  • Provide technical direction and decision-making authority on critical design challenges

  • Interface with senior leadership to communicate project status, risks, and strategic recommendations

Design & Analysis

  • Develop and review CAD models, engineering drawings, and system architectures

  • Conduct advanced engineering analysis (FEA, CFD, tolerance analysis, etc.)

  • Lead design reviews, risk assessments (FMEA), and validation planning

  • Drive root cause analysis and corrective actions for product issues

Testing & Validation

  • Define and oversee validation plans to ensure product performance and durability

  • Analyze test data and refine designs based on results

  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and safety standards

Mentorship & Continuous Improvement

  • Mentor and coach designers/engineers and other members of the technical staff

  • Promote engineering best practices, design standards, and continuous improvement initiatives

  • Contribute to long-term technology roadmaps and innovation strategies

What Do You Need?

To be considered for this role, an individual should meet the following minimal requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field

  • Engineer IV-8+ years of product development experience

  • Proven track record of leading complex engineering projects to successful launch

  • Strong expertise in product design, systems engineering, and manufacturing processes

  • Proficiency with CAD tools (e.g., Creo or similar)

  • Demonstrated leadership in cross-functional team environments

  • 10-20% travel to test sites

Preferred

  • Experience in outdoor power equipment, turf care, or industrial machinery

  • Knowledge of electrification, battery systems, or autonomous technologies

  • Experience with global product development and supplier collaboration

  • Six Sigma or Lean Engineering certification

Competitive Salary The pay range takes into account skills, experience, education, and location. It is not common to be hired at or near the top of the range; compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the annual pay range is between ​$112,000 - $145,000. Cash compensation is one piece of our competitive total rewards package.
