The Mechanical Design engineer is responsible for designing, and developing new products, and maintaining existing product lines through continuous improvement. Must execute new product development project plan to take designs from early concept and prototype to final market launch. Insure that cost, documentation, drafting, performance, quality, reliability, safety, and DFMA metrics meet established requirements. Must coordinate necessary activities with other departments and outside suppliers.

What Will You Do?

In order to grow and build a successful career with The Toro Company, you will be responsible for: 

  • Develop new product designs centered around solving customer problems while maintaining quality, reliability, manufacturing, safety, and cost.

  • Use CAD (CREO) software to implement designs, and communicate with other critical stake holders in the Toro organization.

  • Prepare BOMs, assembly layouts, drawings, standard operating procedures, and other documentation of design.

  • Research new techniques, materials, technology, and consumer trends to implement in new product designs

  • Draft design specifications to be followed by supporting engineering groups, manufactures, and vendors.

  • Ensure designs meet the durability, performance, manufacturability, regulatory, compliance, and quality criteria of The Toro Company and industry safety standards at large.

  • Analyze proposed engineering designs using hand calculations, computer simulation, design reviews, and industrial metrics/standards

  • Co-develop test plans with test engineering department to insure design performance and safety.

  • Coordinate the efforts of outside consultants, labs, suppliers, etc. to improve design outcomes

  • Structure documentation and designs into ERP and PLM systems

  • Organize the work of the drafters, model makers, industrial designer, technicians, engineers, and outside vendors.

  • Work with legal consultants on potential patent activities and liability avoidance.

  • Perform continuous improvement activities to improve design manufacturability, price, reliability or sourcing.

  • Manage continuous improvement activities and engineering change processes

  • Work with assembly plants and vendors to maintain production and adapt to market changes.

What Do You Need?

To be considered for this role, an individual should meet the following minimal requirements: 

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in an ABET accredited Mechanical, Electrical, or Agricultural engineering program

  • Engineer II- 2-4 years of relevant experience required

  • Engineer III- 5-7 years of relevant experience required

  • Experience in applying engineering principles and calculations to validate product development

  • High level of proficiency in 3D CAD software

  • Ability to communicate effectively in group meetings and during presentations

  • Have a love of designing, prototyping, and operating outdoor lawn/power equipment

  • Experience with weldment design, injection molding, metal forming, battery technologies, mechatronics, control systems, Internal combustion engine implementation, electric motors and related regulatory/safety conformance is highly preferred

  • Must be able to create and analyze complete product designs.

  • Must be able to direct the work of drafters, and designers

  • Skillfully collaborates with cross functional teams to promote big picture thinking.

  • Adaptability to transferrer skills and knowledge from past experience and related technologies to new situations.

  • Demonstrated ability to independently monitor multiple tasks and objectives at one time

  • Communicate and work effectively across many levels and departments, where flexibility, adaptability, and resiliency are important.

  • Occasional travel to test sites

Preferred experience:

  • Experience with DFMA, DFMEA, GD&T, Lean, Six Sigma, Simulation and Analysis software, hydraulic and electrical schematic standards, and ASME Y14.5 all preferred

Competitive Salary The pay range takes into account skills, experience, education, and location. It is not common to be hired at or near the top of the range; compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the annual pay range is between ​$84300 - ​$122000. Cash compensation is one piece of our competitive total rewards package. You may be eligible to participate in an incentive program, which rewards employees based on individual and organizational performance.
