Tool and Die Maker at The Toro Company:

This position requires an employee to exercise a high degree of initiative to be able to plan, design, build, repair, and troubleshoots dies and fixtures.

They will work from complicated drawings or construct tools where no design is available. Do highly skilled fitting, adjusting and timing. Perform such work as multi-station progressive dies, intricate compound dies, and complex index milling fixtures. Perform any tool room, machining operation. Use advanced shop mathematics and all types of precision measuring instruments. Responsible for following safety rules, producing quality workmanship, and for good housekeeping. Requires a high degree of experience and trade skill and a thorough knowledge of machine shop practices.

What Will You Do?

  • Work closely with engineers, supervisors, and shop floor personnel.

  • Plan, design, build, and repair a wide variety of complicated tools, dies, jigs, gauges and fixtures, to close tolerance, review use and application of tools to resolve (troubleshoot) problems.

  • Required having knowledge of metals, use of heat treating processes, basic hydraulics and basic low voltage wiring. 

  • Parts must be made to print and process specifications. 

  • Responsible for inspecting own work.

  • Complete all associated paperwork and record keeping as required.

What Do You Need?

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

  • 2+ years of technically related Tool Room experience or completion of a recognized Tool and Die academic program, completion of recognized Tool & Die apprenticeship program. 

  • Continuous visual attention and mental concentration is required throughout the work shift due to planning and layout of extremely close tolerance work. 

  • Must be able to concentrate and work on multiple tasks simultaneously with frequent interruptions and tight timelines for just in-time production. 

  • Core skills training in basic shop math, measuring tools and blueprint reading or demonstrated equivalent knowledge is required. 

  • Knowledge in machine shop practices and the use of respective inspection instruments used in inspecting own parts. 

Work Environment:

  • The nature of this job requires an employee to stand the entire shift and work primarily at a bench.  Much of the job requires an employee to work in the Punch Press Department, working in and around punch presses doing a considerable amount of lifting.  Much of the lifting is done in awkward and extended position.  Required lifting over 40 pounds but on an occasional basis. 

  • This position exposes the employee to considerable injury when opening and closing dies weighing up to 10,000 pounds.

    Although adequate safety devices are used to lift dies, their control can be unpredictable and miscalculation on crane movement is possible.

  • Exposure to sharp edges. 

  • Potential to serious injuries such as smashed fingers and toes due to dropped dies and fixtures.
