As a core member of product development teams, the New Products Manufacturing Engineer plays a key role in the development of successful products by maximizing product quality and minimizing product cost. As a subject matter expert on existing and emerging product manufacturing methods, guides new product development with regards to DFM/A.

What Will You Do?

In order to grow and build a successful career with The Toro Company, you will be responsible for: 

  • As core team member, participates with product development teams from concept evaluation/selection through prototype construction/evaluation to full production; advises the team on tradeoffs related to manufacturing assembly process (subject matter expert); leads manufacturing process capability studies as needed to support product development; working with the AME and the team, makes decisions on key elements of manufacturing process design;  leads preparation of production area and pilot run activities.

  • Assumes responsibility for the manufacturability of the product by providing manufacturing feedback to the team as it relates to DFM/A.

  • Works closely with the Tooling Engineer to develop optimal production tooling that provides the highest quality assemblies, taking into consideration poka-yoke principles and new technologies.

  • Investigates and implements the use of new technologies and methodologies that can be incorporated into the product design and manufacturing processes to reduce costs, enhance product performance and quality and/or enhance the state of the art of manufacturing or product development.

  •  Coordinates the prototype manufacturing processes through inspection, weld, paint, and assembly; working with the team to ensure stakeholders needs are met with all manufactured prototypes.                                            

  • Assumes the primary leadership role during the manufacturing of Pilot units.  Coordinates all supporting activities throughout the manufacturing facility during the Pilot run and 1st Production.

  • Leads the development and maintenance of the following engineering documentation into production.                

    • Final line assembly processes and balance.

    • Labor standards.

    • Pertinent welding and subassembly processes.

    • Tooling lists for all operations.

    • Torque methods and tooling to meet critical to quality joints.

    • Paint lists.

    • Routings and Bills of Material.

    • Process E.C.M.s

    • Lean activities

  • Supports product into production.

    • Investigates and resolves assembly and welding problems.

    • Investigates and resolves inventory problems i.e. part substitutions and piece part rework.

  • Utilizing lean techniques, develops and maintains engineered labor standards on manufacturing operations and assembly line balancing. Requests changes in plant layout and equipment to facilitate lean manufacturing, improve productivity, quality, and operator safety.

  • Works with the Engineering Technician to insure Bill of Material accuracy.

  • Works directly with the Welding and Tooling Engineer in the development of new weld and assembly fixtures, along with maintenance of existing tooling.

  • Must develop a strong professional working relationship with all customers including: Advance Manufacturing Engineering, Design Engineering, all internal customers in Tomah, and external end-user customers. Must possess strong leadership and organizational skills and be able to handle multiple priorities.  Must be able to demonstrate a strong project management skillset. Must work well as a team member as well as a team leader.

What Do You Need?

To be considered for this role, an individual should meet the following minimal requirements:

MFG. ENGINEER II

  • BSME, BSIE or similar engineering discipline plus 3-5 years’ experience in manufacturing systems, equipment, processes, tooling, and work measurement. 

  • Project Management experience required.

  • Possess good supervisory and budgeting skills.

MFG ENGINEER III

  • BSME, BSIE or similar engineering discipline plus 5+ years experience in manufacturing systems, equipment, processes, tooling, and work measurement.

  • Project Management experience required.

  • Possess good supervisory and budgeting skills.
